Her local leadership in promoting animal behaviour science and development and her international involvement have enhanced the SAVA's image and stature locally and internationally. Quixi has served the veterinary profession, through the SAVA, with dedication in an exemplary way over many years and is clearly a worthy candidate for receipt of the Boswell Award. v SOGAMedal Dr Katherine Barker Dr Katherine Barker practised locally and in the UK and became involved in educating animal welfare assistants in primary health care and welfare. During this period doing locum relief work at companion care clinics made her concentrate on animal welfare. She later saw the desperate need for veterinary services amongst the indigent and previously disadvantaged of the Eastern Free State and registered the Cluny Animal Trust to serve the needs of these animals. The animals were served by providing veterinary treatment, educating animal owners, and running a small animal hospital and a fully equipped and functional mobile theatre. It led to her facility gaining recognition as a centre for Compulsory Community Service veterinarians to do their year of training after graduation. The Mobile Theatre made it possible to do outreaches over weekends over a wide area of the Eastern Free State Treatment included 2682 sterilisations and 10891 vaccinations, 9064 ecto- and endo-parasite treatments, and treatment of 1185 diseased and injured animals, even treating 1365 large and wild animals over three years. She also organised sponsorship to assist pet owners in caring for and feed their dogs during the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr Barker's involvement, compassion and exceptional community service make her an asset to the profession and a worthy recipient of the Soga Medal. Ms. Claudia Cloete accepted the Award on behalf of dr Barker. v Honorary Associate Life Membership (posthumous) Mr David Swanepoel Mr David Swanepoel served as librarian of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (OVR) Institute fromhis appointment in 1985 until retiring in 2020 but passed away shortly afterwards. He had a unique combination of appropriate educational background (graduate and postgraduate degrees in librarianship and a diploma in information management), great technical ability, professional dedication to his work and unwavering loyalty to veterinary science and to the OVR to trace scientific information for OVR staff and other researchers. It proved particularly valuable during the difficult years after the OVR and Library were transferred to Agricultural Research Council (ARC) in 1992. Progressively onerous budget constraints resulted in few new purchases of textbooks and journals; however, he sourced these by exploiting appropriate internet platforms. David was a co- opted founder member of the SAVA's Veterinary History Committee (VHC) in 1995 and enthusiastically participated in all its activities and 2022 SAVA AWARDS
