VN November 2021
Vetnews | November 2021 29 I hope this article in my column finds you and your families well and safe!!! I recently had an interesting discussion with a colleague in the industry. It is prevalent amongst people to stress whether what we do every day is “good enough” . We live in a world of instant gratification and competition, which inevitably may suck us into the trap of comparing ourselves to others. The media is littered with images of the ideal life, ideal bodies, and all sorts of ideals that we pile on top of our limiting beliefs (discussed last month) or fears that we may or may not be conscious of, as well as negative self- talk. Feelings are real and should never be ignored. If somebody is not feeling “not good enough”, brushing it off with a casual “of course you are good enough” comment may not be good enough. We need to understand that the feeling carries a deeper meaning . We, as humans, assign meaning to everything, including emotions and things and events, which, when revisited, reveal deeper our deeper fears and desires. Furthermore, our relationships with ourselves and others can also contribute to the feeling of “not good enough”. Your worth, as an individual or as a professional in your industry, or in any other capacity for that matter, cannot be based on what others think of you. We simply must learn to assign a different meaning to events in our lives. One of the first steps we need to take is to ask the underlying fear behind the feeling of “not good enough”. Often, in my experience with Life Coaching and most of my clients’ lives, the underlying reason is fear or anxiety . Fearing failure and not reaching your full potential is very real. Not being able to make any significant progress towards completing your goals over time will lead to a perpetual state of anxiety. It often creates the illusion that the challenges we face are more potent than those accompanied by self-doubt. Once we have labelled and identified the fear, the only antidote is taking action. Start with small actions and steps that are manageable and develop the drive within yourself. Then employ people that will support you in these endeavours and provide you with earnest and honest feedback. Make sure your objectives and identified next steps are clear and the results expected are measurable so that you can monitor your progress and remain accountable. Re-evaluating your goals and the reasons for wanting to achieve them is essential. This important task will ensure that the purpose (s) we will devote ourselves to is aligned with your most important values. Limit current and potential distractions. Part of this vital step in making sure that we perform at our best is eliminating the excuses that we create along the way based on our fears and limiting beliefs. Finally, we need to take stock of what resources we have available to us in the form of people, physical items, internal resources (determination, willpower, passion, etc.) and resources that still need to be obtained. Once we know what we have in our arsenal, we can map out the process by laying down dated milestones and associated rewards in detail. Ultimately, we are compiling a dynamic document that will serve as an instruction manual on how to progress from your current situation to the desired outcome when the goal(s) has/have been Influential Life Coaching GOOD ENOUGH VS YOUR BEST Dr Mats Abatzidis B.Sc.
