VN October 2024

Vetnuus | October 2024 43 From fish oil to algae oil Fish is an important ingredient in pet food. For example, Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) which are found in fish oil, are nutrients which play a key role notably in supporting the formation of cell membranes and in the development of neurological systems (brain, eyes and nerves). ROYAL CANIN® has started to replace fish oil with algae oil in some of our formulas since 2022. In fact, we have identified specific varieties of microalgae that can serve as an alternative source of EPA/DHA. Using this alternative ingredient will help to reduce the amount of fish used in ROYAL CANIN® recipes. Using by-products as a source of nutrients We use by-products from both animal and plant sources. These by-products are an excellent source of protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins, which play a vital role in supplying essential amino acids to rebuild and renew organs and muscles, supporting the immune system and supplying energy. This sustainable practice helps to prevent waste, reduce strain on livestock production and support farmers while reducing prices of food for human consumption. Moreover, it contributes to avoiding competition with human food. (5) This supports our contribution to the circular economy. For instance, the proteins in our ROYAL CANIN® Anallergenic product come from specially processed poultry feathers. By choosing this alternative and very highly hydrolyzed source of protein (not used in the human food chain), we are creating a more sustainable supply chain while still ensuring optimal and safe nutrition for our pets. At Royal Canin, health is our mission, and we believe cats and dogs can only be truly healthy within a thriving ecosystem on a healthy planet. Therefore, creating a sustainable world for pets today, tomorrow and for generations to come is a priority for Royal Canin. We ensure this through a physically segregated supply of soy certified by Proterra. • The remaining soy used in other factories is fully covered by Round Table on Responsible Soy Association (RTRS) direct credits. • Overall, 100% of our upstream soy suppliers are fully compliant with the Amazon Soy Moratorium.
