Vetnews | November 2024 28 « BACK TO CONTENTS Veterinary Student Committee Outreach (VetSCO), an impactful initiative rooted in community service and veterinary education, embodies synergy between veterinary students and underserved communities. Operating as a committee of the Onderstepoort campus of the University of Pretoria, VetSCO plays a pivotal role in enhancing animal welfare while simultaneously offering invaluable practical experience to future veterinarians and veterinary nurses. Our Mission At the core of VetSCO’s mission is a commitment to fostering the development of veterinary and para-veterinary students through the realworld application of their skills. By engaging in community outreach, our work not only contributes to improving the health and well-being of animals and people from underprivileged backgrounds but also enriches the educational experience of our students. We believe that through hands-on practice and interaction with both animals and their owners, students gain essential experience, build their confidence, and refine their practical abilities. A Holistic Approach to Veterinary Care VetSCO’s community outreach efforts are rooted in a One Health framework, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. This approach ensures that our initiatives are not only addressing the immediate needs of animals but also contributing to the broader health and sustainability of the communities we serve. Our work involves a range of activities, including vaccination drives, educating people about animals and support for rural communities. These initiatives are designed to empower pet owners with knowledge about animal care and welfare, as well as to provide essential veterinary services that might otherwise be inaccessible.
