Vetnews | Julie 2024 20 « BACK TO CONTENTS Nutritional diseases of New World Primates Dorianne Elliott Valley Farm Animal Hospital, Extraordinary Lecturer, Dept of Companion Animal Clinical Studies, University of Pretoria New World Primates, originating from South America, are an extremely varied family of animals including species such as the tiny pygmy marmoset as well as the large howler and spider monkeys. They fill numerous environmental niches and have extremely varied natural diets. The common marmoset, for example, eats large quantities of tree gum while some of the larger species are mainly folivorous and have modified stomachs that act as fermentation chambers. For this reason, their captive diets must be carefully researched and adapted to the needs of each species. Incorrect feeding is one of the biggest causes of illness in captive primates and with proper nutrition, a myriad of diseases can be completely prevented. Diseases covered in this presentation include gluten and lactose intolerance, Type 2 diabetes mellitus, gastroenteritis, metabolic bone disease, scurvy and marmoset wasting syndrome. v https://vetlink.co.za/ EASTERN CAPE & KAROO BRANCH CPD DAY 2024 7 September 2024 Venue: Dolphins Leap, Port Elizabeth IMPORTANT DATES Registration open – 20 June 2024 Early Bird Rates until – 15 July 2024 Standard Rates from – 16 July 2024 Late Registration – 15 September 2024 Preliminary Program – 15 June 2024 CONFIRMED SPEAKERS MORE SPEAKERS TO FOLLOW Registration sponsor Events I WVAC 2024
