Vetnews | Desember 2024 4 « BACK TO CONTENTS Resting I am sure that you also experience the rat race at its best this time of year. It feels like silly season is on steroids rushing to get everything done before we all can (hopefully) take a break. I was confronted by my son-in-law about resting. When do we rest? Do we rest effectively? And that made me curious about the subject. I asked AI for an answer (just in case you think I am clever) and it came up with, what I think, is a good summary of what it entails. There are many ways to rest effectively, including getting enough sleep, practising mindfulness, and taking breaks from social activities: Sleep: Stick to a sleep schedule, limit naps, and create a restful environment. Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness to help you sit with difficult emotions. Social rest: Take a break from social activities and spend time with people who support you. Mental rest: Take short breaks, journal, and disconnect from digital devices. Physical rest: Get enough sleep, or try active rest like yoga or stretching. Sensory rest: Try digital detoxes, meditation, or sensory deprivation therapies. Emotional rest: Share your feelings with a friend or write them down in a journal. Creative rest: Take a break and engage in creative activities. Spiritual rest: Reconnect with a sense of purpose and belonging. Resting helps your body recover, which can improve your performance, prevent injuries, and reduce inflammation. It can also help manage stress, lower blood pressure, and support a healthy immune system. I know this is not the time for everybody to take a break and prepare for the year ahead. If you have to work, stay positive and make sure you actively rest later on. Maybe you just came back from resting, in that case, sterkte, it is tough to have to work while it looks like the whole world is on holiday. Maybe you have a chance to practice one or more of the above anyway. In this month’s magazine you will find some equine-related articles, Dr Trudie Prinsloo also highlights pitfalls when it comes to certification. Have a look at the first part of the experiences from a vet who has had his own practice for 50 years. It should serve as an encouragement to younger vets. May your festive season be exactly that, festive. Please travel safely whether travelling abroad, locally or to the supermarket, buckle up, take a snack, and take some water. Enjoy spending time with friends and family. And may you remember the reason for the season: the birth of our Saviour. Andriette v From the Editor Editor’s notes / Redakteurs notas
