So let us explore the most common toxicities seen during the festive season, to educate our clients, and prevent unnecessary intoxications and potential fatalities. Below is a table summarising some of the most common toxicities seen in dogs, and a practical guide to toxic levels: Alcohol: Dogs are unable to metabolize alcohol and thus it can be toxic causing lethargy, respiratory depression and dangerously low body temperatures. Therefore, dogs should be kept away from alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages contain ethanol from fermented grains and fruit and are easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and throughout the body. Dogs ingesting Ethanol show a rapid onset of metabolic acidosis within 3 hours and acute renal failure within 48 hours at a dose of 173mmol/kg.
