Vetnews | Desember 2024 34 « BACK TO CONTENTS VHS – Digitisation of 16mm films dealing with the history of our veterinary profession The Veterinary History Society is the custodian of a collection of old 16mm films that served as a resource for student training as well as an archive of veterinary information. Due to the fragile nature of cellulose acetate film and the fact that images fade, the VHS would like to get these films digitised as soon as possible. This is going to be a costly exercise and it is hoped that colleagues in practice, state service and industry will be supportive. Most of the containers or reels have title labels. Sponsors can elect to pay for the digitisation of certain titles and as an acknowledgement of the support, a short message from (or identifying) the sponsor will be included at the start of the digitised file. Films vary in length between 20 and 40 minutes. Most are in colour and have sound. There are some duplicates – probably ordered because of the likelihood of wear and tear. The VHS has had some of the films digitised at a professional studio to ascertain the quality of those selected and the quality of the digitised files obtained. The quality is excellent and there is every indication that these films were well compiled and very professionally done. An ex-Dean of Onderstepoort and some State Vets acted in one and besides being educational, it was also very interesting and entertaining.
