Vetnews | Augustus 2024 26 « BACK TO CONTENTS The 2024 Presidents award The 2024 Presidents award was awarded to Professor Gareth Bath for his extensive and honourable contribution to livestock production by the South African Society for Animal Science at their 54th Annual congress held in East London from 03 to 05 July 2024. This just goes to show the true value of what is possible when there is successful collaboration between animal scientists and veterinarians and that taking a multidisciplinary approach assists in addressing important livestock issues, finds solutions to grand challenges and drives economic development. v An initiative of the SOUTH AFRICAN VETERINARY ASSOCIATION Non-profit Company: 1998/016654/08 Non-profit Organisation: 000-234 NPO Public Benefit Organisation: 130001321 CVC News I CVC Nuus Dr. Japhta Mokoele founder and one of the principal veterinarians of Pretoria West Animal Clinic is dedicated to providing excellent and affordable veterinary service to the communities of Pretoria West. Nomsa Ndhlovu is a qualified and registered Animal Health Technician (AHT) whose passion for companion animals is unparalleled. She is the lead project manager for the BoehringerIngelheim rabies vaccination program. Together (Vet and AHT), they form a formidable veterinary team with the necessary expertise, experience, and skills that complement each other seamlessly as they provide veterinary care to the needs of the patients who come to their facility. Over and above the routine work done at the veterinary facility, more is done to reach out to needy communities in Pretoria West to assist them with the rabies vaccination program and veterinary advisory services on planned area-by-area visits twice a month depending on the need of the area. We have embarked on a Rabies campaign as of May 2024 and over 140 animals, including cats, dogs, and rabbits, have received their first vaccine. Among the animal owners, a remarkable cat owner stood out, having rescued their cat from a catastrophic accident that left it with a blind eye. Despite the trauma, the cat's resilience was evident, and its bond with the owner was truly heartwarming. If only you could see the color of the injured eye! It's a striking blue, a color so vivid and captivating that it left us in awe. The unique beauty of the cat's eye was a poignant reminder of the incredible journeys these animals and their owners undertake. Special thanks to SAVA-CVC and Boehringer-Ingelheim for sponsoring us with the vaccines. v PRETORIA WEST RABIES CAMPAIGN SPONSORED BY BOEHRINGER-INGELHEIM by Nomsa Ndlovu (AHT)
