VN May 2023
Vetnuus | May 2023 32 I hope this article finds you and your families well and safe!!! Last month we discussed how the impossibility mindset could form barriers in our minds because of circumstances and events, and that, in turn, create mental pathways that prevent us from even trying to pursue something we want. This month we discuss acting towards our goals. I am certain that you have seen performers of various forms do things you believe in your mind that you can do too. You saw somebody lifting weights and believe you can do it too. You saw somebody jump over an obstacle, and you did not think it was all that special because you believed you could do it too. Let me be more specific. Countless people today observe the opportunities and accomplishments of other people and say, “I could do that.” Belief alone, however, is never enough to achieve a goal. Too often, people have come to me as a life coach and have set a goal with me, and when I ask them to give me a score on their belief that they can get it done out of ten, it is always a high score of 8 to 10. The next obvious question is, “Well, if you believe you can do it, why are you here seeking life coaching? Why haven’t you achieved this goal already?” Because it is far easier to state a belief than to act on it . The greater the challenge…, the higher the stakes for failure…the greater the risk…, the stronger one’s faith must be. Believing in something is different from doing something. Furthermore, it is not enough to act on a belief just once. A genuine belief requires that we act on that belief repeatedly, often daily. Small acts of belief or faith – repeated frequently – are what create strength over time. So, when do you make your move? An interesting thing seems to happen when you are at the point of summoning all your faith and courage to make a positive move or act on your beliefs. Somebody you know comes along to warn you of the dangers or predict your demise: - They may tell you they are “protecting” you (protect you from yourself? Protect you from your ability to dream?) - They are offering advice because they love you (they love you but do not trust you) - Tell you that what you are doing will make you “different.” - Tell you that you are putting yourself in a position to be ridiculed, rejected, labelled as a failure Here is what may be happening: a. Your courage may be making them uncomfortable b. They may be reminded of their fears and inability to muster the courage c. They may be jealous of the possibility of you succeeding d. They are worried if you succeed, you will spend less time with them Ask yourself : “Am I going to become a leader?” OR “Am I going to be an achiever or not?” If you want to live like others cannot, you must do what others will not. You must not only believe in a greater good and a higher purpose but also act, regardless of what others say. The good news is that things get easier once you are in motion towards your goals. You have less time to theorize and agonize. You are actualized and energized by your efforts. Successful completion of a goal requires total commitment. Once that commitment has been made, you will find that a certain amount of momentum is created. There are two more benefits to being fully committed to your goals: 1. You are no longer constantly worrying about “risk”. You are more focused on the tasks that need to be done. 2. 2. The more you work diligently, the less inclined you are to listen to others discouraging you. You know where you are going, what you will do when you get there, and how much fun you will have in making the journey and reaping the rewards!!! Today is the best possible day to stop watching and waiting. Do your due diligence and then act wholeheartedly!!! Next month, we will continue looking at other concepts and ideas and improving our quality of life and overall performance both at work and at home. v Influential Life Coaching BELIEF ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH Dr Mats Abatzidis B.Sc.
