Vetnuus | June 2023 22 Dr Richard Clatworthy Richard was born on 4th April 1935, in Salisbury, then Southern Rhodesia. He was schooled there and later in Plumtree, Bechuanaland (now Botswana), where he gained the Cambridge Higher Certificate. After two years of the BSc Agric course at the Natal University in Pietermaritzburg, he was admitted to our Veterinary Faculty and qualified in 1958. He subsequently did locums in Rhodesia before moving to England in 1961, where he settled in Pontefract, Yorkshire as an assistant in a private practice that included duty at the Greyhound Racing Track. He met Jenny Moor as a client, and they married in September 1963. They honeymooned in Rhodesia and decided to move there in 1965, where he was initially employed in the Salisbury Research Laboratory before being transferred to do field service stints in Wankie, Bulawayo and Gwanda and finishing up as Principal Veterinary Officer in Gwelo in 1980. After the Unilateral Declaration of Independence, they eventually returned to England early in 1984 for their two sons' interests. They then settled in Beverley, East Yorkshire, where he joined the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), later renamed the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). He was involved in combatting Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and also hadmeat hygiene duties. He retired in 1999 but continuedwith freelance employment doingTB testing and being involved in outbreaks of Swine Fever and Foot and Mouth Disease. In 2008 the couple attended the 50-year reunion of our final-year class. In correspondence, subsequently, he disclosed that he was suffering from progressive ill health. Jenny was able to take care of him. Still, a total collapse in December resulted in him being admitted to the local community hospital, where he passed away peacefully on 4th January 2023. As a student, I remember joining him in his little darkroomupstairs in the old hostel, where he processed his photographic film. Photography and a lifelong interest in trains were his hobbies. He had a vast knowledge of all models of steam- and electric locomotives and enjoyed taking photos of them and trains generally. He was also so proud of his sons. Steve, the elder, is qualified to maintain Sports Turfs and Golf Courses, while the younger, Trevor, is a pilot for British Airways. Jenny was his very much-appreciated wife for nearly 60 years. v Neels Roos
