Fortunately, as it turned out, my youthful audacity was understood, and thus began an amazing relationship that still exists today. Dr Gordon has treated the herds (presently 2100 cows in milk and 550 beef breeding cows) and advised us throughout these 42 years. Never, during this period, have I or my son, who replaced me in the operation, ever questioned his ability, integrity or worth. In fact, we have never had any serious altercation, which is a phenomenal achievement considering the characters and the length of time involved. Dr Gordon is an outstanding Vet. He always arrives on time, fully prepared for the work on hand, with an appropriate urgency that still gives sufficient time for client issues that we might present. His demeanour at work is consistent and friendly, and he has the ability to leave his personal issues at home. He works fast (which is important if one is spec-ing and pd-ing 500 cows in a morning) with an amazing degree of accuracy. From the very beginning, Dr Gordon has had an extraordinary ability to correctly diagnose an animal’s ailment or disease, which invariably results in the correct prognosis. It is, therefore, not surprising that when he operates on an animal, his success rate is abnormally high. The Wonder-man. No. Although he will work on a horse, it quickly becomes apparent that they are not one of his favourites! Over the years, Dr Gordon has been very aware that it is important to stay abreast of the improvements in the Veterinary Sciences. I admire his drive to continually try to improve himself and his performance. He has completed a degree in Economics, and I don’t think I am incorrect in saying he has completed studies in Psychology. Adrian is an outstanding person. Over the many years, although our relationship has predominantly revolved around veterinary issues, he has also become a good friend and counsel. In 1999-2000 I was exposed to extreme anxiety through strike action, which resulted in me having to dispose of the milking herd. During this difficult time, Adrian was a solid pillar of support, and his advice was invaluable. Adrian has encouraged us to call him at any time to discuss issues on the farm, and he has never shown signs of displeasure. I cannot stress the sense of security this gives the farming operation. Further to this, Adrian is confident enough in himself and his work so that he is happy to explain in simple layman’s terms complicated veterinary issues. He is a very good teacher. I fully support Adrian in continuing to do the work he so clearly loves for as long as he can, understanding the responsibilities this carries. I am confident he understands this. When he finally decides to retire, he will be profoundly missed by “all” on the farms.” . v Awards
