VN July 2023

Vetnuus | July 2023 16 Boehringer-Ingelheim has been an incredible supporter of SAVA-CVC and 2023 has been no exception! It is always easy to list the number of vaccines done (almost 20 000 rabies vaccines over 6 months) or tick and flea treatments given (more than 500 with their donations of tick and flea treatments!) What is not so easy to count is the education given every day at CVC clinics and there lies the real value of the work the CVC vets do and what Boehringer-Ingelheim is supporting! The knowledge shared with lower-income animal owners is something that is carried over from one person to the next and from a parent to a child. Dr Renee van Rheede van Oudtshoorn has been running the Gqeberha Rabies Project and she is experienced with mentoring of AHTs and CCS vets. I am always in awe of her passion and dedication with regards to training the next generation of animal welfare workers not only covering clinical skills but also time management, communication skills and project management! Vava Hlela was one of the AHTs working with Dr Renee in 2022 and the team walked from house to house to educate about rabies and vaccinate. House visits have the benefit of a higher coverage of animals that are vaccinated against rabies but also prevents the spread of rabies and distemper which commonly happens when vaccinating at a central point.
