VN February 2023

Vetnews | February 2023 25 December and January is likely due to state veterinary staff being on holiday therefore fewer samples submitted for testing. Our AHTs have been working on contract and 2x of the AHTs managed to secure permanent employment commencing 1 January 2023. The experience on our rabies project has greatly contributed to their job readiness! A huge thank you to Boehringer-Ingelheim which has provided further funding for the project and we will therefore continue with the 2x remaining AHTs in Gqeberha. This team is re-vaccinating Kwa Nobuhle since it has been more than 6 months since the first vaccines were done in Kwa Nobuhle and an occasional positive rabies case is reported. Unfortunately, the number of positive rabies cases in Buffalo City (East London) is increasing therefore we are considering initialising another project in this region as well. We have a very positive state vet in Buffalo City as well as an experienced private veterinarian that would love to run a similar project in there area! Lab analysis is suggesting that rabies outbreak in Buffalo City and Gqeberha originated in the old Transkei therefore rabies vaccination campaigns in this area is crucial to prevent another outbreak. Any parties that would like to contribute to the campaign, can pay funds into our bank account marked “Rabies 2023” or contact us on cvcmanager@sava.co.za. v SAVA-CVC & EduCVC are registered on PayPal and PayFast! All donations qualify for an 18A Tax certificate which means your donation is tax deductible! Please contact us cvcmanager@sava.co.za for details.
