Profs Ivan Horak (2001) and Tammi Krecek (2019) are the other South Africans whose contributions to veterinary parasitology have been recognised in this way by the WAAVP. Banie Penzhorn and Tammi Krecek were co-chairpersons of the committee that organised the 17th WAAVP conference at Sun City in 1997, which was attended by more than 700 delegates. The WAAVPAfrican Foundation was set up to administer the substantial surplus of funds generated by the very successful conference. The WAAVPAF goals are to support deserving awardees ready to present their research to an international audience, to bring positive recognition to their institutions, countries and academic fields, and to develop global networks. Travel scholarships are awarded to next-generation veterinary parasitologists from Africa to present their research findings at WAAVP biennial conferences. To date, the WAAVP-AF has supported 95 upcoming veterinary parasitologists from 16 countries to present their research at WAAVP conferences in Europe, Malaysia, India, Argentina, USA, Canada and Australasia. A recent analysis indicated that since attending WAAVP conferences, awardees have published at least 1020 parasitology-related research papers in scientific journals, both African and international. The WAAVP-African Foundation is truly a model of success. v References: KRECEK R.C. et al. 2011.
