VN August 2023
Augustus 2023 39 This surgery involves removing a diamond-shaped piece of tissue at the medial canthus that includes the medial canthus eyelid margins and caruncle. The lacrimal puncta are joined into a single punctum. This is a microsurgical procedure that requires wound closure with two layers of fine vicryl sutures. This surgery results in a smaller palpebral fissure, elimination of facial fold corneal contact, more lubrication of the cornea, elimination of the medial entropion and dramatically improved patient comfort. Conclusion: Brachycephalic Ocular Syndrome presents a significant challenge for owners of brachycephalic breeds, but with early detection and appropriate management, the impact on the dog’s vision and overall well-being can be mitigated. Regular veterinary check-ups, maintaining good eye hygiene and following the prescribed treatment plan are vital to ensure the best possible outcomes for these pets. Breeders should intentionally breed away from the worst problems. Medial canthoplasty surgery should always be considered a surgical option. v References: • The pandemic of ocular surface disease in brachycephalic dogs: The brachycephalic ocular syndrome L Sebbag and R F Sanchez, Veterinary Ophthalmology. 2023;26:31–46. • An eye on the Shih Tzu dog: Ophthalmic examination findings and ocular surface diagnostics L Sebbag et al Veterinary Ophthalmology. 2023;26:59–71. • Tear filmbreakup time andSchirmer tear test innormal dogs: Effects of age, sex, reproductive status, skull type, andnasolacrimal duct patency H.
