Vetnuus | August 2023 26 In Memoriam Stan Miller Stan (Edgar Stanley Miller) was born in Windhoek on 8 June 1945, the son of Clive Edgar Stanley Miller and Gertruida Catharina Visser, and he had 3 brothers and a sister. His schooling was at the Centaurus High School in Windhoek where he matriculated in 1963. He graduated BVSc at Onderstepoort in 1970 and later BVSc (Hons) in 1981. He married Gerda Maria Prinsloo in 1971 and they had 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Between 1972 and 1979, Stanwas a StateVeterinarian stationed in Gobabis, Aranos andWindhoek, with a short stint in private practice. He then took up a post as Head of the Artificial Insemination Unit at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Institute in 1980, and in 1981 as a lecturer in Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Faculty until 1997, when he moved back to Namibia as a State Veterinarian at Aranos until his retirement in 2010. Contract work followed until failing health led to a move back to Windhoek where he died on 5 January 2022. Stan enjoyed and excelled at training farmers and students, and was active in computing, carpentry, music, creative writing, ToastMasters, DIY projects and volunteering as needs arose. His cheerful participation in class reunions will always be happy memories for those who knew him. v Gareth Bath 2023 In 1976 she was nominated Star Woman of the Year by the Star newspaper; in 1979, Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year by the Women’s Veterinary Association of the USA; in 1987, Pretorian of theYear and in 1994 she received the Laureatus Award from the University of Pretoria. She also received Ad Educandum awards from the University of Pretoria in 1989 and 1992. It is obvious that apart from recognition as an outstanding scientist and academic, Malie, especially as a female achiever of note also earns recognition. She was an exceptional, dynamic, well-spoken woman with an outgoing, friendly personality that made her very popular both locally and internationally. She lived her Christian values in her quiet way and attracted people with her wonderful personality. Her love for the arts and other cultural disciplines gave birth, together with other colleagues, to the Onderstepoort Culture Club and the Onderstepoort Forum. After retiring from Onderstepoort in 1993, she went to stay in Somerset West where she passed away in May this year. Despite her failing health, she gained a reputation in the retirement village as an endearing and loving person. The veterinary profession will be poorer due to her passing but richer due to her contributions. v
