VN November 2022
Vetnuus | November 2022 28 Dr Duncan Prinsloo Duncan was raised in Benoni in Gauteng. His passion from the age of 5 years was to be a veterinarian and to help realise this dream he worked after matriculating at SAA in the maintenance department and as a truck driver until he had sufficient funds to study Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort. Duncan qualified in 1972 and was posted immediately to Ixopo as State Vet in order to fulfil his Bursary obligations. He then moved to Vryheid as State Vet and later started his own Practice there. In 1979 he took up a post at Pretoria City Council and subsequently obtained an honours degree in Public Health from Onderstepoort. Duncan was sponsored by a client do an Embryo Transfer Course for Cattle at San Antonio in Texas U.S.A. He was highly regarded at this famous Institute for his excellence in work done there. In 1983 Duncan returned from America, bought a property outside Bronkhorstspruit and built his own Embryo Transfer Centre. In 1985 he completed an Embryo Transfer Course for Equines at Colorado State University. Duncanwas active in these fields till in his seventies. Duncan worked in over eleven countries performing his speciality. His many achievements include exporting the first cattle embryos to Mauritius, the first person to do non-surgical Embryo Transfer and establishing a world record with twenty- four live born calves from a single embryo flush. In 2008 in a tragic armed robbery at his home he lost his beloved wife, Letitia, and was badly wounded himself. He suffered from much pain and had severely limited mobility the rest of his life. Even though he had these major injuries he worked until shortly before his death, often doing fertility work including rectal examinations with a crutch in one hand. Duncan was the “Bravest of the Brave” and never let life’s challenges keep him down. His unwavering faith in God, sense of humour and delightfully characteristic laugh was always part of his life. Besides his work as a veterinarian Duncan was passionate about fishing, bundu bashing and canaries. Duncan leaves behind his son Duncan, and daughters Letitia and Sharlien as well as 6 grandchildren. v John Adam Dr Rapule Mphuthi: 18/01/1979 – 30/04/2022 Dr Jesse Coleman: 09/12/1948 – 26/09/2022 We honour and remember the contributions made by our colleagues who recently passed away.
