VN November 2021

Vetnews | November 2021 33 • Polydiaxonone ( PDS, MonoPlus ) Synthetic, monofilament, absorbable Good knot security, easy to handle Around 14 days, 14% of tensile strength is lost [3]. It is completely absorbed at 180 days. [2] This long periodmakes the suture material a less likely choice for general, non- complicated tissues. • Chromic coated Catgut (Poor choice) Natural, multifilament, absorbable Poor knot security and tensile strength, especially when it gets wet. [4]Degradation is significantly influenced by infection/ inflammation.Moderate tosevere tissue response. [1] Around seven days, 66%of tensile strength is lost [1] To conclude, the ideal suture material for use in the oral cavity will: • be absorbed in a predictable rate, • cause little tissue reaction, • is easy to handle with minimal knot slippage, • will be strong enough to hold tissues together until adequate healing of tissues, • be non-allergenic and non-carcinogenic, • be attached to a strong needle that stays sharp and stable in the needle holder. Therefore, using a 4/0 and 5/0 Monocryl/Monozyl on a reverse cutting needle in dogs and cats respectively is recommended. v References [1] E. D.
