Rabies has been found in four jackals and one unvaccinated domestic dog in Muldersdrift, Komdraai and Lanseria. An intensive dog vaccination campaign has been launched by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Two human exposures had also been reported and both people had received appropriate preventative treatment to prevent disease, National Institute for Communicable Diseases communication manager Nombuso Shabalala said.

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will be running a free rabies vaccination campaign for the Muldersdrift and Lanseria community and surrounding areas from the 13th June to 15th June 2016.This follows confirmed cases of rabies outbreak in that area. “It is highly recommended to have your pets (dogs and cats) vaccinated against Rabies even though they were vaccinated during the past year. All pets (dogs and cats) over 3 months of age, must be vaccinated.
