Die Suid-Afrikaanse Veterinêre Raad en die Suid-Afrikaanse Veterinêre Vereniging is uitermate verontrus en besorg oor die steeds toenemende onwettige doodmaak van renosters in Suid-Afrika. Ons is geskok deur die wreedaardige slagting onder hierdie diere en onderneem om alles in ons vermoë te doen om die betrokke persone aan bande te lê. Ons is ook verontwaardig en diep geskok oor bewerings dat veeartse by hierdie wrede aktiwiteite betrokke sou wees. Ons distansieer ons van enige kollegas wat aan sodanige misdade skuldig bevind sou word.

 

Ons wil ook graag daarop wys dat slegs veeartse wat by die Suid-Afrikaanse Veterinêre Raad geregistreer is narkosemiddels mag besit en toedien. Ons versoek lede van die publiek om nie-veeartse wat in besit van sodanige middels is en / of wat wild immobiliseer by die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens, die Suid-Afrikaanse Veterinêre Raad of die Suid-Afrikaanse Veterinêre Vereniging te rapporteer. Dit sal grootliks daartoe bydra om die huidige tragiese toedrag van sake te stuit.

The South African Veterinary Council and the South African Veterinary Association would like to express its extreme dismay and concern over the escalation in rhino poaching in South Africa. We are horrified by the brutal slaughter of these animals and promise to do everything in our power to stop the people responsible.

We are also incensed and deeply saddened by the alleged involvement of veterinarians in these inhumane activities and distance ourselves completely from any colleagues found guilty of such an offense.

 

We would like to bring to the attention of the public that only veterinarians registered with the South African Veterinary Council may possess and use anesthetic drugs. We request the assistance of the public in reporting lay persons that are in possession of game anesthetic drugs, and/or are darting game animals, to the police, the South African Veterinary Council or the South African Veterinary Association. This will greatly assist in curbing the present tragic situation.

Heartworm

 

A recent article in the February edition of Animaltalk stated that several cases of heartworm had been diagnosed in Gauteng.  The South African Veterinary Association has been in contact with several of the specialist physicians in the Johannesburg area and Dr Volker Schwan, an expert in filariosis of dogs and cats, from the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Science in Onderstepoort.
